About SCANDEM 2018

SCANDEM 2018: Technical University of Denmark, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark, 25th – 28th June 2018

It is with great pleasure to announce that SCANDEM 2018 - The 69th Annual Conference of the Nordic Microscopy Society – will be held in at Technical University of Denmark Kgs. Lyngby from Monday 25th to Thursday 28th June 2018 (

The Technical University of Denmark is recognized internationally as a leading university in the areas of the technical and the natural sciences, renowned for our business-oriented approach, our focus on sustainability, and our amazing study environment. The main campus, the venue of SCANDEM 2018, is located 15km north of Copenhagen in Kgs. Lyngby. The campus is easily accessible by public transport from the center of Copenhagen. The main campus is also home for the Center for Electron Nanoscopy, which is a research infrastructure inaugurated late 2007. The center houses several high-end electron microscopes including dedicated EBSD and TKD instruments as well as probe and image corrected transmission electron microscopes with in situ gas treatment capabilities. SCANDEM 2018 will also mark the 10-year anniversary of the center.

SCANDEM was founded in 1948. It has since then served as an active organization focusing on all aspects of and related to microscopy. These include the development of microscopic technology, specimen preparation techniques and applications in materials and life sciences. Country members of SCANDEM are Sweden (the Society’s registration), Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland. In order to promote knowledge of microscopy in the region, SCANDEM coordinates a number of activities, including meetings, courses and workshops. The society’s annual meeting/conference is organized by a local committee alternating between the Nordic countries. In 2018 it is Denmark’s turn to host the society’s annual conference.

SCANDEM 2018 will focus on the following main topics within the field of nanoscale imaging research:

  • In Situ Electron Microscopy
  • Electron Spectroscopy
  • X-ray microscopy
  • Scanning Probe Microscopy
  • Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy
  • Image and Data analysis

Our goal is to create an interdisciplinary environment that can address key fundamental questions at the interface between physics, chemistry, biology, materials science and engineering, with strong impact on understanding materials on the nanometer scale.

The scientific program features two plenary lectures, five keynote lectures, and numerous presentations by conference participants in parallel sessions, poster sessions and trade exhibition.

Monday, June 25 is dedicated to themed workshops including methodology and hardware demonstration and knowledge sharing.

Plenary speakers

Ib Chorkendorff (DTU Fysik, DTU, Denmark) – Catalysis, past present and future

Lone Gram (DTU Bioengineering, DTU, Denmark) – Visualizing bacteria and the behavior

Keynote Speakers

•Quentin Ramasse (SuperSTEM, UK) – Analytical Electron Microscopy

•Lucy Collinson (Francis Crick Institute for Electron Microscopy, UK) – Correlated Light and Electron Microscopy of biological samples
